Basic Emergency Preparedness (BEP)

  • Objective

    Workshop participants will gain an understanding of the framework, process and various components of emergency preparedness at municipal level.

  • Intended Audience

    This workshop is designed for those who have a role to play in their community’s preparedness for or response to emergency or disaster situations. Topics include the emergency planning process, risk assessment, management systems and strategies.

  • Duration
    v This workshop may be delivered in a one or two-day format. The latter allows for the coverage of the optional topics as well as greater group interaction.

  • Workshop Process

    The workshop will facilitate dialogue among its participants and encourage them to relate their own experiences to the material covered.  All workshops are customized to best suit clients needs.

Community-wide Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment (CVCA)

  • Objective

    Workshop participants will enhance their ability to identify vulnerable populations within their community under varying emergency events or conditions.  Participants will also learn how to further assess the capacities and necessary resources required for such groups.

  • Intended Audience

    This workshop is designed for municipal leaders, officers, emergency planners and responders who have an emergency management responsibility.  Topics include definitions of vulnerability and capacity, key issues or implications of vulnerable populations on emergency planning and response, and ways to link such assessments to other planning activities.  A model for community-wide vulnerability and capacity assessment will be provided and the process for implementation described.

  • Duration

    This is a one-day workshop.

  • Workshop Process

    This workshop will allow participants maximum interaction with each other as well as with the content materials. Group work will be used to encourage participants to explore topics, apply and personalize the content to their own reality, community or municipality.

Emergency Operations Centre (EOC)

  • Objective

    Workshop participants will gain an understanding of the roles and tools involved in an Emergency Operations Centre, during the response to a municipal disaster.

  • Intended Audience

    This workshop is designed for those expected to have a role related to the municipal Emergency Operations Centre during the municipality’s response to an emergency or disaster situation.  Topics include process requirements, operational issues, and needs and solutions within the E.O.C.

  • Duration

    This is a two-day workshop (preferred) but may be delivered, with tighter coverage and interaction within one day.

  • Workshop Process

    The workshop will facilitate dialogue among participants and involves much group work. IF two-days in duration, it also involves a simulated EOC situation that would require participants to work through some of the issues relating to EOC management. All workshops are customized to best suit clients needs.

  • Emergency Public Information Officer (EPIO)

  • Objective

    Workshop participants will gain an understanding of the roles and techniques involved when serving as an Emergency Public Information Officer for their organization or Municipality during disaster situations.

  • Intended Audience

    This workshop is designed for those expected to serve as Emergency Public Information Officers for their agency or the municipality during emergency or disaster situation. Topics include a look at the information needs of the public, response organizations and media during an emergency. Obstacles, solutions and key techniques to effective communication are also revealed.

  • Duration

    This is a one-day workshop, which may be delivered over a two-day period to allow for significantly more practice.

  • Workshop Process

    The workshop is based on discussion and practice of the various Media interactions.  Participants practice being interviewed by the media in a simulated setting. All workshops are customized to best suit clients needs.

Emergency Site Management (ESM)

  • Objective

    Workshop participants will gain an understanding of the roles and tools involved in the management of an Emergency Site, during the response to a municipal disaster.

  • Intended Audience

    This workshop is designed for those expected to have a key role within a designated emergency site during a municipality’s response to a disaster situation.  Topics include requirements for process, layout and strategies to enhance emergency response using the ESM model. Operational needs and issues at the site level are also revealed in a simulated site operation.

  • Duration

    This is a two-day workshop (minimum) but may be delivered over three days to allow for more in-depth coverage and group interaction.

  • Workshop Process

    The workshop will facilitate dialogue among participants and involves much group work. It involves a simulated disaster site situation that would require participants to work through some of the issues relating to Site management. All workshops are customized to best suit clients needs.

Emergency Exercise Design and Conduct

  • Objective

    Workshop participants will learn the process and develop the techniques necessary to design and conduct an emergency exercise.

  • Intended Audience

    This workshop is designed for those expected to design emergency-related exercises for their agency or the municipality. Participants will be introduced to tools and techniques used to develop, conduct, and evaluate an emergency exercise.

  • Duration

    This is a minimum two-day workshop, which is best delivered over a three-day period to allow for maximum practice.

  • Workshop Process

    The workshop is based on group work and practice of the various steps of the design process. Participants work in teams through a scenario to develop the framework of a corresponding emergency exercise. All workshops are customized to best suit clients needs.

Industrial Emergency Response Workshop

  • Objective

    Workshop participants will gain an understanding of the issues, processes, techniques and organization involved in a multi-jurisdictional response to an emergency in industrial settings.

  • Intended Audience

    This workshop is designed for those who have a role to play in their industry’s preparedness for or response to emergency or disaster situations. Topics include risk analysis, resource allocation, and strategies for emergency management within the industrial setting.

  • Duration

    This is a minimum one-day workshop

  • Workshop Process

    The workshop will facilitate dialogue among its participants and encourage them to relate their own experiences to the material covered. All workshops are customized to best suit clients needs.

Mayors and Elected Officials

  • Objective

    Workshop participants will gain an understanding of their role and the tools available to them in preparing for or responding to disasters affecting their municipality.

  • Intended Audience

    This workshop is designed for municipal leaders and officials who have an emergency management responsibility. Topics include legislative components, municipal emergency management strategies, inter-jurisdictional communication and decision-making skills.

  • Duration

    This is a one-day workshop, which may be expanded to two IF a media communications component is also desired.

  • Workshop Process

    The workshop will facilitate dialogue among its participants to better meet the needs of its participants. The sessions (e.g., communication, decision making in a crisis) would provide tools that would be of value in ANY crisis situation at Municipal level.

School Emergency Planning Workshop

  • Objective

    Workshop participants will enhance their ability to prepare for and respond to an emergency within their school environment (K-12 and post-secondary).

  • Intended Audience

    This workshop is designed for school administrators, teachers, parent advisory groups and support staff who have an emergency management responsibility.  Topics include what to expect during a school emergency, how to assess hazards that may affect the school, the key components of emergency management, plus specific procedures and key responsibilities that enhance the emergency response effort.

  • Duration

    This is a one-day workshop.  Prior purchase of the School Emergency Plan will make this workshop more meaningful to individual schools as this workshop aids in the customization of the generic plan.

  • Workshop Process

    This workshop will allow participants maximum interaction with each other as well as with the content materials. Group work will be used to encourage participants to explore topics, apply and personalize the content to their own reality and school environment. Much of the afternoon is devoted to applying the concepts through scenario applications.
